The question is, as in the times of Roman or Holy Roman Empires, or the Third Reich for that matter, whether the space so diverse and unequal as the EU in its current borders even needs a forced haphazard unification under the umbrella of faceless bureaucrats, all things considered.
The answer, to me, seems a resounding NO. At the very least, for nations on the Eastern periphery of the EU European integration clearly brings much more evil than good, with a sole possible exception of Poland, whereto the local center of political and military gravity is shifting from the withering Germany. So I think your country may count itself as one of the greatest beneficiaries of the great 2004 enlargement, even though that same process planted dragon teeth in the Eastern flank of the EU.
