I support your opinion in general, with the main proviso that isolation of Russia from Western world now seems, increasingly likely, the goal for Kremlin, not some kind of corollary damage. And, of course, I see Putin as not the sole mastermind behind this fracas, but only the chairman at the board of cabal. Him ousted, the cabal could continue in useful (for many parties & provinces in Russia and the West) ways of divided worldbuilding. Ukraine appears destined for forever, albeit cindering, or maybe sintering, war. This is better than being led like a lamb to quick slaughter, though only marginally — see Yugoslavia, Yemen, or Colombia.
