Eastern and Southern Ukrainian irredentism predates Putin by considerable margin, as these lands were mostly populated with ethnic Russians during recent couple of centuries. Ukrainians, Greeks, Bulgarians, Krymchaks, Tatars et al. were, of course, also present, but as significant minorities.
