During the last few years, almost all military operations of the US, be it Ukraine, Afghanistan, Syria, or Yemen, possess a strong aftertaste betraying strategic planning not quite unlike Aelius Gallus’. Maybe that’s because the US are now close to the same stage as the one Late Roman Republic came to when transformational crisis was running amok. Now we can see something very similar to transition from Republic to Empire. Power per se doesn’t corrupt absolutely, it can only attract persons prone to corruption. But fully fledged kakistocracy does.
